The Subaru WRX has one of the most dedicated enthusiast communities of any car on the market. Yet the one document that should be in every owner’s library — the OEM factory service manual — is often the last thing people think about. Stock maintenance, performance modifications, engine builds — none of it is done correctly without knowing the factory specifications first.
FA20DIT Rod Bearing Clearances
Rod bearing wear is the most discussed topic in the WRX community. The FA20DIT is sensitive to oil quality and change intervals. The factory service manual specifies the acceptable rod bearing clearance range, the correct plastigage procedure for checking clearance, and the replacement bearing specifications by journal diameter. Running bearings outside factory specification leads to premature failure regardless of oil quality.
Turbocharger Oil Feed and Return
The IHI RHF55 turbocharger uses engine oil for both lubrication and cooling. The factory manual covers the oil feed line inspection procedure, acceptable flow rate for the turbo oil feed, and the critical cool-down idle procedure after hard driving. Running a turbo without proper cool-down cycles is documented in the factory manual as a leading cause of center bearing failure.
Manual Transmission Fluid Specification
The 6-speed manual TR690 uses a specific gear oil that is often substituted incorrectly. The factory specification is GL-5 75W-90. Using GL-4 fluid does not provide adequate protection for the TR690 gear geometry. The factory manual specifies the correct fluid, drain and fill quantity, and synchronizer wear inspection procedure.
