Aftermarket repair guides — Haynes, Chilton, and similar publishers — are written by third parties who reverse-engineer service procedures from production vehicles. They cover the most common repairs on average configurations. An OEM factory service manual is the original documentation written by the manufacturer's own engineers, covering every variant, every option package, and every mid-year running production change.
The difference matters most in electrical diagnosis, ADAS calibration, and transmission service. Torque specifications in aftermarket guides are often rounded averages. Factory manuals give exact values for every fastener, every fluid capacity, and every calibration target — because those values were engineered for your specific vehicle, not estimated for a general audience.
